Exploring new destinations is an exciting adventure that allows us to discover the geological and cultural wealth of different places, such as Colombia. With its stunning landscapes ranging from majestic mountains to vibrant cities, every corner of Colombia offers a unique
experience.
To make the most of this diverse trip in climates and altitudes, it is essential to prepare adequately. Below, we will give you a series of recommendations regarding preparation to keep in mind during your trip to Colombia. From selecting the right clothing to deal with
climatic variations to planning activities to explore the fascinating geology of each region, every detail contributes to creating a memorable experience full of discovery and adventure.
General characteristics:
- Duration: Santander is 5 days and Manizales is 5 days+ flying in and out of the country.
- Effort level: on a scale of 1 to 5 the effort level of daily activities in the differentfields can vary between 2 to 3. On the days of Chicamocha and Manizales the effort level ranges between 4 to 5. This means that these days the activitieswill have a longer duration and greater slopes.
- Comfort level: 3 to 5. The accommodations have everything you need,however, in some places these will be basic due to location of geologic sites and cities..
- Ecosystem: During each 5 day tour, we will cross several climatic levels.therefore, it is important to have clothing for both warm and cold climates. As well as bringing what you need to be prepared for rain.
- Climate: 6° C to 33° C
- Elevation: 227 to 4000 m above mean sea level (mostly below 3500 m asl)
Physical preparation: Before the trip, it is important to carry out a medical check-up to ensure that you are in suitable condition to travel. Additionally, performing mobility and strengthening exercises can help prevent injuries during travel. We would advise lots of walking leading up to the trip.
Smart Packing: Packing clothes suitable for different climates is essential. Include layers that can adapt to changing temperatures, waterproof clothing for rain, and comfortable, durable footwear for hiking on diverse terrain.
Adaptation to altitudes: If the itinerary includes high altitude places, such as mountains or high cities, it is advisable to take precautions to prevent altitude sickness. Resting, hydrating abundantly, and avoiding excessive exertion are important practices.
Safety and health: Carrying a basic first aid kit with medications for minor pain, insect repellent and sunscreen is essential. Additionally, having travel insurance that covers any medical emergency is prudent. As part of the accompaniment during the 10 days, we will have and English speaking person trained in Wilderness First Aid.
Communication and contact: Staying in touch with family or friends during the trip can provide peace of mind and support. Additionally, carrying contact information for embassies or consulates in the destinations visited is useful in case of emergencies.
Hiking gear: Make sure you have suitable hiking footwear, such as sturdy boots with good grip and ankle support. Additionally, carrying hiking poles can provide stability and reduce the load on your joints during hikes.
Hiking clothing: Opt for comfortable, breathable clothing, such as convertible pants that can adapt to different temperatures and technical t-shirts that wick away moisture. A light but warm jacket and a hat to protect yourself from the sun are also an important item.
- Layers of clothing: Opt for a layering system that includes breathable clothing that can adapt to changes in temperature. For example, a short-sleeved or long-sleeved technical t-shirt as a first layer, a sweatshirt or light jacket as a second layer, and a waterproof and windproof jacket as a third layer.
- Versatile pants: Carry convertible pants that can be transformed into shorts as needed. This provides versatility to adapt to hot and cool climates while traveling.
- Appropriate Footwear: In addition to hiking boots for outdoor activities, it is important to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for daily use, such as sneakers or sturdy closed-toe shoes for urban walks.
- Underwear and socks: Don’t forget to pack comfortable, breathable underwear, as well as socks suitable for outdoor activities that wick away moisture and prevent Chafing.
- Clothes for lounging: Also include comfortable clothes for resting and relaxing, such as light and comfortable pajamas, a soft sweatshirt and cotton pants for cooler nights.
Additional accessories: Complete your clothing list with accessories such as multifunctional scarves or bandanas that can protect the neck and head from the cold or the sun, light gloves for cool weather, and caps or hats to protect you from the sun. Some walking sticks
can be very helpful on the different routes that will be taken. Don’t forget to bring a comfortable and ergonomic backpack to carry water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and a small first aid kit. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-protecting sunglasses will complete your hiking gear.
Hydration: An important consideration for any traveler is to stay well hydrated, especially in a country with diverse climates like Colombia. It is recommended to carry a reusable bottle with you so you can refill it at drinking water sources and thus reduce the consumption of disposable plastics. This is not only beneficial for the environment, but also ensures that fresh water is available at all times during the trip, facilitating uninterrupted exploration. We will have water bottles at all times so we can carry the bottles on our tours.
Electricity and current: Colombia has a predominantly alternating current (AC) electrical system, with a standard frequency of 60 Hz and a voltage that varies between 110 and 220 volts. It is advisable to carry universal plug adapters to ensure the compatibility of electronic
devices during the trip.
