Meet Your Expert Guide: Francisco Alberto Velandia Patiño
Francisco Alberto Velandia Patiño is a seasoned geologist with over two decades of experience in regional geology, neotectonics, geomorphology, and structural geology, particularly in the context of hydrogeology, geological hazards, and subsurface resource exploration.
Before joining academia, Francisco dedicated 21 years to INGEOMINAS (now the Servicio Geológico Colombiano – SGC), where he played a pivotal role in coordinating geological cartography, hydrogeology, and geothermal energy projects. He also held the position of Deputy Director of Subsoil Resources, overseeing critical projects in geological assessment and resource management.
Since 2011, Francisco has been a prominent professor at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), contributing to postgraduate programs in Geology, Physics, and Engineering. His research focuses on the recent tectonic evolution of the Northern Andes, providing invaluable insights into the dynamic geological processes shaping the region.
With his extensive field experience and academic expertise, Francisco will offer an in-depth perspective on the geological forces at play in the Ruiz Volcanic Complex, enriching the exploration of Santander and Manizales with a profound understanding of the region’s tectonic and geomorphological context.
Dr. Schonwalder’s career encompasses significant roles in both academia and industry. She co-founded GMAS S.A.S., a company dedicated to geoscientific services, and has contributed to the mining sector. Her postdoctoral research includes positions at the Earth Observatory of Singapore and the Universidad de Caldas in Colombia, funded by Minciencias. Currently, she serves as a tenured professor at the School of Geology at the Universidad Industrial de Santander.
Notably, Dr. Schonwalder was part of the international team that discovered the impact crater responsible for the Australasian tektite strewn field, a significant finding in planetary geology.
With her profound knowledge of volcanic systems and hands-on experience in geoscientific research, Dr. Schonwalder offers invaluable insights into the dynamic geology of the Ruiz Volcanic Complex. Her guidance will enrich your exploration of Santander and Manizales, providing deper understanding of the region’s volcanic landscapes.
