General characteristics:
Duration: The tour from Coyhaique is 6 days + flying in and out of the country.
Effort level: on a scale of 1 to 5 the effort level of daily activities in the different fields can vary between 2 to 3. This means that these days the activities will have a longer duration and higher difficulty. There will be a day that will include several hours of hiking, but we will take plenty of breaks and have additional people that will stay with anyone having more difficulties with moderate uphill walking.
Comfort level: 3. The accommodations have everything you need, however, in some places these will be basic due to location of geologic sites and small towns.
Ecosystem: During each 6 day tour, we will cross several climatic levels. Therefore, it is important to have clothing for both warm and cold climates. Be prepared for the possibility of rain, even during the Southern Hemispheres summer.
- Climate: 5° C to 33° C
- Elevation: 227 to 2000 m above mean sea level (mostly below 1500m asl)
Physical preparation: Before the trip, it is important to carry out a medical check-up to ensure that you are in a suitable condition to travel. Additionally, performing mobility and strengthening exercises can help prevent injuries during travel. We would advise lots of walking leading up to the trip.
Smart Packing: Packing clothes suitable for different climates is essential. Include layers that can adapt to changing temperatures, waterproof clothing for rain, and comfortable, durable footwear for hiking on diverse terrain.
Adaptation to altitudes: The itinerary in Chile will not be extreme high altitude places, such as mountains, but it is still advisable to take precautions to prevent altitude sickness. Resting, hydrating abundantly, and avoiding excessive exertion are important practices.
Safety and health: Carrying a basic first aid kit with medications for minor pain, insect repellent and sunscreen is essential. Additionally, having travel insurance that covers any medical emergency is prudent. As part of the accompaniment during the 6 days, we will have an English speaking person trained in Wilderness First Aid (WFA)
Communication and contact: Staying in touch with family or friends during the trip can provide peace of mind and support. Additionally, carrying contact information for embassies or consulates in the destinations visited is useful in case of emergencies.
Hiking gear: Make sure you have suitable hiking footwear, such as sturdy boots with good grip and ankle support. Additionally, carrying hiking poles can provide stability and reduce the load on your joints during hikes.
Hiking clothing: Choose comfortable, breathable clothing, such as convertible pants that can adapt to different temperatures and technical t-shirts that wick away moisture. A light but warm jacket and a hat to protect yourself from the sun are also important item.
- Layers of clothing: Opt for a layering system that includes breathable clothing that can adapt to changes in temperature. For example, a short-sleeved or long-sleeved technical t-shirt as a first layer, a sweatshirt or light jacket as a second layer, and a waterproof and windproof jacket as a third layer.
- Versatile pants: Carry convertible pants or a pair of shorts and long pants that can be worn during different climactic conditions. This provides versatility to adapt to hot and cool climates while traveling.
- Appropriate Footwear: In addition to hiking boots for outdoor activities, it is important to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for daily use, such as sneakers or sturdy closed-toe shoes for urban walks.
- Underwear and socks: Don’t forget to pack comfortable, breathable underwear, as well as socks suitable for outdoor activities that wick away moisture and prevent chafing.
- Clothes for lounging: Also include comfortable clothes for resting and relaxing, such as light and comfortable pajamas, a soft sweatshirt and cotton pants for cooler nights.
Additional accessories: Complete your clothing list with accessories such as multifunctional scarves or bandanas that can protect the neck and head from the cold or the sun, light gloves for cool weather, and caps or hats to protect you from the sun. Some walking sticks can be very helpful on the different routes that will be taken. Don’t forget to bring a comfortable and ergonomic backpack to carry water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and a small first aid kit. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-protecting sunglasses will complete your hiking gear.
Hydration: An important consideration for any traveler is to stay well hydrated, especially in a country with diverse climates like Chile. It is recommended to carry a reusable bottle with you so you can refill it at drinking water sources and thus reduce the consumption of disposable plastics. This is not only beneficial for the environment but also ensures that fresh water is available at all times during the trip, facilitating uninterrupted exploration.
Electricity and current: Chile has a predominantly alternating current (AC) electrical system, with a standard frequency of 50 Hz and a voltage of 220 volts. It is highly advisable to carry a universal plug adapter to ensure the compatibility of electronic devices during the trip.
