Our Story

A Family Passion for Adventure, Education, and Exploration

At GeoTours, travel is more than a business — it’s a lifelong passion. Our story began in the 1980s, when Bill met his wife Maartje from the Netherlands at a youth hostel in Guangzhou, China. What started as a four-week adventure through the countryside, including a horseback riding tour in the village of Songpan, turned into a lifetime of exploration and family journeys.

Today, living near the western end of the Columbia River Gorge in Corbett, Oregon, Bill and Maartje continue to inspire a love for travel and learning in their sons, Kian and Boaz. As a family, they have embarked on month-long expeditions across Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia — discovering new cultures, landscapes, and geological wonders.

A Journey Fueled by Curiosity and Expertise

Beyond traditional sightseeing, the family’s travels often focused on understanding the geology of each region. From rockhounding adventures off the beaten path to studying unique geological formations, exploration and education have always been at the heart of their trips.

Bill, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering, worked for 14 years in the mineral resources industry across Alaska, Arizona, and South America. Today, he collaborates with leading regional geology experts in Colombia, Chile, Argentina, and across the western United States to offer authentic, educational travel experiences.
